Looking for little peace today? Go to Our Lady!
People, universally, have many worries. And the times of Pope Benedict XV were plagued with extremely difficult circumstances of World War I, influenza epidemic and the Russian Revolution. The world needed a beacon of peace, something or someone who could pacify the feeling of overwhelming uncertainty and fear. Pope Benedict XV chose to put his faith in the model of peace: Our Lady, Queen of Peace.
This title comes from Jesus’ title as Prince of Peace, Who reconciled Heaven and Earth through His Crucifixion. Mary, ever-faithful to her Lord and King, stood at the foot of His Cross and witnessed this firsthand. She is the chosen Mother of God and therefore is the Queen of Peace, interceding on our behalf so we may know peace through her Son.
In 1917, Benedict XV decided to add the title Queen of Peace to Litany of Loreto as a reminder of Our Lady’s presence in an ever-changing world. Soon after, there was a mass added commemorating Mary in this name, asking for her continued intercession for peace to reign in the world. Mary, Queen of Peace continues to be remembered today in our world’s troubles and conflicts to bring a little serenity into our hearts. We can be confident that Our Lady hears our prayers and intercedes on our behalf. One of the most powerful and beloved prayers that Mary asked us to say daily is the rosary, and these days we should pray it evermore devoutly.
